Interview: Bryan Ferrand, Z Corporation

Last day of September, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Ljubljana hosted a conference on Rapid Development and Manufacturing. The participants were acquainted with software and hardware solutions used for building prototypes and final products. In the course of the presentation of 3D-prototyping, led by Mr. Bryan Ferrand from Z Corporation, we have recognised multiple opportunities both for the industry and the home users. We have invited Mr. Ferrand, as someone having a decade of experience in this industry, to a short talk about the development of 3D-prototyping and 3D-printing.

Domestic and Foreign Toolmakers to Meet in April at the FORMA TOOL Fair

This April, the Celje fairgrounds will once again host the international trade fair quadruplet Forma tool, Plagkem, Graf&Pack and Foundry, organised by Celjski sejem d.d. Every two years, the fair activities attract the most innovative and developmentally oriented companies and individuals from Slovenia, and especially from abroad. This year the four fairs, the largest tradition having the Forma Tool toolmaking fair, will take place from April 12 to 15. The presentations of new technologies and exhibitors' developmental achievements will once again be significantly supplemented with accompanying professional programme, which is going to uncover the trends and the challenges in the main and 17 related branches of the industry.

More and More Cars Driving with Parts Made with Slovenian Technology

Litostroj Ravne, a provider of comprehensive engineering solutions for the global automotive industry, has indirectly, i.e. through international buyers, supplied parts for more than 70 percent of cars driving in Slovenia. Our technology is present in the parts of automotive brands Citroën, Volkswagen, Peugeot, Renault, Mitsubishi, Ford, KIA, Hyundai, Mercedes and many others. Right now we are continuing with the development of an innovative technology for precision cutting of sheet metal, which will bring a new approach to the manufacturing processes in the international automotive industry. The current trends of development in the automotive industry are focused on weight reduction, in order to comply with the requirements for reduced emissions.

ZOLLER's Fascination with Measuring Fascinates the Experts, too

With many innovations presented at the five international fairs end of last year (IMTS in Chicago, BIMU in Milano, AMB in Stuttgart, MSV in Brünn, Vienna-Tec in Wien), Zoller's »fascination with measuring« has also fascinated the professional public and reaffirmed the company's leading position on the market. The article presents the main autumn novelties from Zoller. ZOLLER »CAZ« is the first virtual measuring device used for designing tools.

EuroMold 2010: Good International Participation and Excellent Business Climate

The 17th instance of EuroMold fair took place at the Frankfurt fairgrounds from 1 to 4 December 2010. This year EuroMold attracted approximately 60.000 visitors who enjoyed the interesting exhibition stands of 1.384 exhibitors from 38 countries of the world and numerous accompanying events (conferences, forums) on more than 65.000 m2 of exhibition area. A slight recovery of industries represented at EuroMold fair, related mostly to product development and manufacturing and toolmaking, could also be sensed by the increase in the number of exhibitors compared to the last year's event (EuroMold 2009), amounting to 2,2 percent. The share of foreign (non-German) exhibitors has increased by 2,5 percent, the pole position taken by China with no less than 124 exhibitors. Slovenia was represented by Kolektor and Metal Ravne.

Lean Organisation and Kanban

Although the principles of lean organisation are well known, their implementation is often related to many difficulties and errors. One of the key elements of lean organisation is a working pull system for product manufacturing and supply with components and subassemblies, demanding that only amounts that have been ordered are manufactured. The article presents the position of the kanban system in the whole picture of lean thinking and its relations and influence on other tools of a lean system. A case study is presented of implementation of just-in-time supply with semi-manufactured products, and the requirements that have to be fulfilled in order to avoid hidden traps.

Reducing the Product Bending in an Existing Injection Mould

The article presents a proper approach to solving the issues with injection-moulded plastic products. The process of reducing the bending is presented on the case study of a dosing tube, a part of a cover for the MCM4 household appliance. The present state analysis and solution finding by means of injection moulding simulation are demonstrated (Autodesk Moldflow Insight). The issues in the production of thermoplastic injection-moulded products have not changed for decades.

Lifecycle Planning

Detailed lifecycle analyses are employed for planning products that are friendly to the environment in the production, use and finally in recycling. Upgrading is one method of extending the life of machines and factories and reducing the harmful effects on the environment. Detailed analyses lead to more efficient new technologies. The times have changed and today it is more important than ever before to aim well ahead both in finance and in business operations, also considering the effects of our actions or inactions on the environment and the climate.
